Kawasaki, the brand that introduced
the original off-road utility vehicle in 1988, is leading the way with an
innovative new vehicle that sets the industry standard for years to come.
The all-new 2005 MULE™ 3010 Trans4x4 is the world’s first four-passenger 4x4
off-road utility vehicle that can be transformed by the operator into a
two-passenger vehicle with an extended cargo bed.
Based on the popular MULE 3000 series, the new MULE 3010 Trans4x4’s spacious
four-passenger cab easily accommodates four adults. But with a couple of
quick adjustments, the operator can fold down the rear bench seat and extend
the cargo bed farther forward to increase payload capacity. When the
operator wants to transform it back to a four-passenger vehicle, the same
quick adjustments are made in reverse order.
The wheelbase of the MULE 3010 Trans4x4 is 11.6 inches longer than that of
the MULE 3010 4x4, but features the same styling, car-like controls,
dashboard and front under-hood storage. Additional body features for the
Trans4x4 include retractable rear seat belts and padded rear-passenger grab
handles.
The MULE 3010 Trans4x4 utility vehicle utilizes the same durable and
reliable powertrain as the MULE 3010 4x4. The quiet, liquid-cooled
industrial V-twin engine has a proven record for hard-working reliability
and is matched to Kawasaki’s highly refined continuously variable
transmission (CVT).
The CVT itself has been fine-tuned for the Trans’ higher passenger and cargo
capacity, and features high and low range, plus reverse. The operator can
also select either two- or four-wheel drive operation, with power being
transferred to a shaft-driven dual-mode differential and limited-slip front
differential.
One of the benefits of the MULE 3010 Trans4x4’s extended chassis is that
engineers were able to increase fuel capacity nearly 20 percent, from 5.3
gallons to 6.4 gallons.
Combined with a heavy duty DeDion/leaf spring rear suspension system, the
MULE 3010 Trans4x4 has a cargo capacity of 400 pounds in four-passenger
guise, and 800 pounds with the cargo bed extended forward. Plus, with an
optional towing hitch, the new Trans can tow up to 1,200 pounds.
Other chassis features include smooth-riding MacPherson strut front
suspension and rack-and-pinion steering, which helps to make steering light
and accurate.
Braking power is provided by four hydraulically operated, self-adjusting
drum brakes that are sealed to protect from water, mud and other debris, and
23-inch tires provide a comfortable ride and maximum traction over a variety
of surfaces. |
